How do ships from Chicago get out to the St. Lawrence/Atlantic Ocean if the Niagara Falls is in the way?

Chicago is a major port in the midwest, and ships go up Lake Michigan, down Lake Huron through Detroit/Lake Erie, but the problem is how do the ships get past the Niagara River if there is a giant waterfall in the way to Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence?
